Well, hi! My name is Megan Ferguson, and I’m humbled you’re here. And since you are here, you (or someone you’re connected to) have gymnastics running through your veins. Like me! I spent 18 years in this sport—20, including my time as a grad-assistant after competing for OU—but now I consider it a lifetime after realizing, once you’re a gymnast, you’re always a gymnast. It’s a pretty cool club.
So I’m not exaggerating when I tell you, no matter the situation, I’ve been there. The highs, lows, accomplishments, and disappointments – each of which (and everything in between) I have experienced more times than I could possibly count. And while I don't love talking about my own accomplishments, I feel I owe you some of my credentials if you're going to trust me with my wisdom and experience—
After 14 years of club gymnastics – state and regional titles, a TOPS National Team qualification, some JO-National gold, and a beam skill in my name – I was honored to put a bedazzled-exclamation point on my career for four, final, incredible years in the crimson and cream… with an *OU* oh-so proudly on my sleeve (that now lives in my heart for life.)
At Oklahoma, I was privileged to contribute to countless team wins and a historic Super Six qualification (Twice! Which resulted in 2nd and 3rd place finishes!) – while personally-receiving: 7 All-American titles, the second place NCAA title on beam (beam is my favorite!) senior year, South Central Regional Gymnast of the year, an AAI-Award Finalist, and the Dr. Prentice-Guatt Postgraduate Scholarship - before working for the team for two years in grad school.
And after 20 years (nearly my entire lifetime,) I shockingly pivoted to the “real world,” working in advertising, where this new atmosphere of competitive-thrills resulted in a few other awards… who knew I could still win stuff without the leotard?! (Certainly not me!)
But gymnastics has always tugged at my heart-strings, as it completely built the person I am today and always will be. And this dream of mine is the way I can find my way back to this world, and come home.
Anyone—teammate, coach, local journalist (lol)—could tell you: Positive affirmations and words of encouragement were my love language and leadership-style throughout those years, and that is the catalyst for my mission today: To cut through the demanding—physically, mentally, and emotionally—work, non-stop striving for perfection, complex and exhausting schedules, and unique challenges that only gymnasts face... and ensure that there is at least one enthusiastically-positive voice in her world each and every day – to remind her, not only, how magnificent she is right now, but that no goal, no dream, is too big when you put in the hard, and heart, work. It’s the kind of support I needed as a young gymnast navigating this tough world, and I want to make sure no one ever goes without it now.
I always believed that there is real magic in this crazy sport we all love (we fly for real, after all!) which means there must be magic in all of us who do it. And let me tell you, encouraging every gymnast to discover her own is one of the greatest joys in my life. So, hey, this is my dream come true: To encourage you (and all gymnasts!) to make your dreams come true. Are you ready? Because I sure am.
